I’m enjoying some precious quiet time these past couple of days while kids have gone off to visit their aunt in PA.
A much-needed reprieve to be still and reflect. To watch the snow, ride my bike (on the indoor trainer, of course!) drink wine, and ponder.
A recent encounter has forced me to reconsider a lot of things. Recalibrate.
To face the fears that have been the recurring themes in my life.
Fear of abandonment. Fear of people walking away. Fear that I make a fool of myself. Fear of the what if’s. Fear of being left alone. Fear of being vulnerable.
At the outset, a voice whispered, “Pledge to be honest.”
That means telling what is. First and foremost to myself. There’s nowhere to hide.
Honesty may be the best antidote to fears.
Honesty means we won’t be wasting time spinning stories and coming up with excuses to fool ourselves and others.
Honesty means facing one Truth instead of parsing through the variations of false pretense that fears lead us to create. There’s one clear choice without the distraction.
Honesty means getting to what truly matters so we all get to move on — even if it hurts at the moment.
I talk a lot about honest marketing.
And I want to layer this idea of honesty — being honest with ourselves — onto what we say and do.
Being honest about our values and convictions means we don’t chase bright shiny objects that don’t align with what we stand for.
Goodbye, fear of missing out.
Being honest about what’s the right expression of our message means we don’t get sucked into buzzwords and clichés out of fears or the need to fit in.
Goodbye, fear of not being good enough.
Being honest about the story you want to tell and what makes you tick means how you do YOU in your business is nobody else’s business.
Goodbye, fear of being criticized.
